Series summary[ edit ] Alice Spivak Hyatt Lavin is an unemployed widow after her husband, Donald, is killed in a trucking accident, and with her young son Tommy played by Alfred Lutter in the pilot episode , reprising his role from the film, but played by Philip McKeon thereafter heads from their New Jersey home to Los Angeles so that she can pursue a singing career. Her car breaks down on the way in Phoenix from a presumed engine fire, as seen in the opening credits , and we meet her soon after she has taken a job as a waitress at Mel's Diner, on the outskirts of Phoenix. The later seasons' exterior shots were of a real diner, named Mel's, still in operation in Phoenix. Alice works alongside Mel Sharples Vic Tayback , the grouchy, stingy owner and cook of the greasy spoon, and fellow waitresses and friends, sassy, man-hungry Florence Jean "Flo" Castleberry Polly Holliday , and neurotic, scatterbrained Vera Louise Gorman Beth Howland. Each episode invariably started inside the diner, and most if not all subsequent scenes took place there as well. A frequent set for non-diner scenes was Alice's one-bedroom apartment in the Desert Sun apartments.

List of songs banned by the BBC From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to navigation Jump to search The following is a list of songs that the BBC the British Broadcasting Corporation has, at one stage or another, considered unsuitable for broadcasting on its radio and television stations. Although the BBC has historically banned songs it deemed unsuitable, in recent years the Corporation has claimed that it no longer bans any records. As the United Kingdom's public service broadcasting corporation, the BBC has always felt some obligation to standards of taste and decency, to varying levels, at different times in its history. We have recently adopted a policy of excluding sickly sentimentality which, particularly when sung by certain vocalists, can become nauseating and not at all in keeping with what we feel to be the need of the public in this country in the fourth year of war. Other songs based on Classical music themes that were later banned by the committee for "distortion of melody, harmony and rhythm" were the Cougars ' single "Saturday Nite at the Duck-Pond", which used music from Swan Lake , and " Baubles, Bangles and Beads ", from the musical Kismet , which was based on the second movement of Alexander Borodin 's String Quartet in D. In the case of the Kinks' "Lola", once the offending word had been changed — the brand name " Coca-Cola " to "cherry cola" — the song was given airplay.
